Suicide Bomber Kills Kandahar Deputy Governor

Afghan officials say a suicide bomber has killed the deputy governor of southern Kandahar province and wounded five people.

Authorities say the bomber, who was on a motorcycle, attacked the car of Abdul Latif Ashna Saturday as he was going to work in the provincial capital, Kandahar city. At least one of his bodyguards was wounded. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Separately, Afghan officials say no foreigners were among the eight people killed in a suicide bombing Friday at a Kabul supermarket. Officials earlier said nine people died in the attack, including at least two foreigners. The Taliban also claimed responsibility for that attack.

Also Saturday, the NATO-led coalition force says two of its soldiers died in a roadside bomb attack in southern Afghanistan.

Kandahar is considered the spiritual home of the Taliban and has been the scene of several recent attacks.
